Galway medtech EnteraSense is planning to increase its workforce in order to gain approval for a gastro device in the United States.

EnteraSense is a Galway-based company creating a pill-sized medical device. The novel tablet, which is still in research, detects gastrointestinal bleeding using advanced technologies.

Over the next 12 months, EnteraSense wants to boost its employees from eight to sixteen.

Optical sensors in the pill detect gastrointestinal bleeding. It looks for different wavelengths of light and sends the information to sensors outside the body using an algorithm. The successful First In Human (FIH) trials were completed in Q1 of 2021 in the Czech Republic.

Hospitals and physicians will be the target market. This will make their lives much easier by assisting doctors in determining what is wrong with a patient and prioritizing treatment options. This will save money in the long run by reducing the amount of time a patient spends in the hospital and resulting in better patient outcomes.

The company, which was founded in 2016, has raised €4.5 million to date, with the help of Enterprise Ireland. As part of its expansion, EnteraSense participated in Enterprise Ireland’s high-potential start-up unit.
