EirGrid announcement vital for Irish energy infrastructure
Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, said the announcement today by EirGrid that the North South electricity interconnector will shortly go back into planning with An Bord Pleanala is a vital step for developing Ireland’s energy infrastructure.
Completing this critical infrastructure project will have immediate benefits for electricity users in both jurisdictions, by removing one of the most costly constraints currently restricting the efficient operation of the market. It will also improve security of energy supply on the island.
Ibec Head of Infrastructure Dr Neil Walker said “Our members agree with the finding that the new interconnector should be an overhead line. Putting it underground, despite being more costly for electricity users, simply wouldn’t do the job.”
“EirGrid is also developing two further initiatives, Grid Link and Grid West to ensure better energy provision across the country. A number of design proposals with widely varying costs are being considered. It is important that the option which is eventually chosen does not impose unnecessary additional costs on users, particularly energy-intensive firms.”
