    Principal Investigator (Photonics Devices) - Cork

    The institute is a leader in semiconductor photonics with a vertically-integrated, principal investigator-driven set of research activities comprising of more than 120 researchers. There is a strong concentration on III-V active materials with different groups addressing fundamental material and device design, epitaxial growth and characterisation, device fabrication & characterisation, electronic design, device integration, packaging and subsystem test. Principal applications to date have been in communications, biophotonics and quantum optics. The activities are coordinated through the recently established Irish photonic integration centre (IPIC). There exits comprehensive, open-access semiconductor device processing and analysis facilities covering nanoscale fabrication, advanced deposition techniques, heterogeneous integration to silicon technology, MEMS, and magnetics. This allows the most advanced concepts to be converted into functional devices. The last few years has seen the widespread introduction of semiconductor based photonic devices into commercial applications and this trend is likely to continue for the foreseeable future with needs in communications, energy and health.
