Limerick City and County Council was last night (14/11/14) named Local Authority of the year at the annual Excellence in Local Government Awards, held in association with the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. The awards, which have been running since 2004, recognise best practice in Local Government.

Ian Talbot, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive said, “While 2014 has been a year of hugely challenging change and transformation for local government, Local Authorities have embraced this opportunity to innovate and develop new approaches to sustaining and supporting their communities. It is an honour for us to host these awards and recognise the hard work that goes on at the heart of our communities on a daily basis. I want to congratulate not just the winners and shortlisted organisations but just as importantly, the people who made all these projects and activities happen.”

In presenting the awards, Alan Kelly T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government commented “These awards offer a great opportunity to showcase and reward the excellent work being carried out by Local Authorities across the country. The quality of the projects and the dedication of those involved continue to grow year on year and I am delighted that my Department continues to support these awards.”

Navigating the global market

Since the financial crisis hit the adage to ‘export or die’ has never been more applicable to Irish companies and the CEOs who lead them, writes Deloitte’s David Hearn.

In a recent Deloitte survey, Irish CEOs signalled a major boost in business confidence for 2014 with nine out of 10 CEOs feeling more confident in the performance of their business. Throughout the year trends have generally continued to be positive although it’s hard to imagine a time where there has been so much change, opportunities and risks, facing CEOs. The first trend of note is the emergence of another billion consumers. Extreme poverty has been in steady and meaningful decline over the last 20 years − both as a percentage of global population and in absolute numbers. This is giving rise to a greatly expanded ‘consuming class’. The challenge for many Irish companies is, however, that most of this growth will take place in parts of the world they have not traditionally served in a large scale way. It is in the emerging markets of Asia, Africa, and Latin America where the growth will occur. Understanding the complex demands of this diverse cohort will be a difficult task but given their scale and contribution to overall global growth in consumption, the task is an essential one.

Signs of Recovery but ‘Boom time’ debts still hampering SME Growth

Chambers Ireland has today (10/11/14) said that the latest report from the Credit Review Office shows that the recovery of Ireland’s SME sector is gaining momentum.

SMEs whose cases were reviewed by the CRO are more optimistic about their future, and with many predicting increases in turnover and profitability, they are aiming to grow.

Speaking this morning, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive, Chambers Ireland said “The entrance of the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland, and eventually PTSB, to the SME lending market will add to the various credit facilities already on offer from the banks, and help support this renewed growth amongst SMEs.”

“However, there is still a significant cohort of SMEs who are unwilling or unable to invest in order to grow. These businesses are hampered by debt they took on during the boom years, and whose main focus is now on refinancing or paying down these debts. This is in many ways a lost opportunity for Ireland’s economic recovery, as these businesses would under normal economic conditions be in a position to expand, grow their profits, and take on new employees,” he concluded.

Asian executives spend a week in Shannon learning the ‘Irish way’ of hotel keeping

Ten executives from the Gloria Hotels & Resorts Group in the Far East have spent a week learning the ‘Irish way’ of hotel-keeping at the Shannon College of Hotel Management in Co Clare.

The week-long programme included visits to hotels in the region and represents the first executive education course undertaken by a Chinese international group at an Irish higher education institute.

Shannon College of Hotel Management currently has 400 students, almost 50pc of which are international students, with 70pc of those from China.

“China is working hard on developing its own hotel offering and they want to learn more about how we do it.  They are particularly interested in what we do at a customer service level,” said director of the Shannon College of Hotel Management Phillip Smyth.

“Of course a big attraction for this group is that this region was the first place that their President Xi Jinping visited when he came to Ireland in 2012.”
